A short film by Egyptian writer & filmmaker, Tara Shehata, the motion picture follows the story of Maya, a 14-year-old girl from Egypt who became a vigilante superhero to avenge the death of her mother. The character Maya is played by young Egyptian/Swiss actor, Yasmina El-Abd. Maya’s mother dies whiles undergoing surgery, and she believes the surgeon who performed the operation was beset by evil forces (lurking monsters of Egypt). Still mourning and in anger, Maya, who’s deeply captivated by contemporary superhero culture and stories decided to fight the “lurking monsters” by becoming a superhero vigilante out to seek vengeance for her mother. Maya’s quest to make a change was in motion until she had an encounter that made her question the monsters and her limited power. Using fantasy, Tara Shehata’s film, “demonstrates the beauty and richness present in Egypt while discussing societal issues and women's status" in the North African country.
